Japan warns of a mega earthquake

A mega earthquake alert has been issued following the earthquake in Japan on August 8, 2025 (the date numerically reduced to 8.8.8), which occurred off the coast of Miyasaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island, 20 kilometers northeast of Nichigan City.

The United States Geological Survey reported the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1, at a depth of 25 kilometers, and a maximum Modified Mercalli Intensity of VII (Very Strong).

A tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake. It was activated in the prefectures of Kōchi, Ehime, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima, forecasting waves up to 3.3 feet. Tsunami waves of 50 cm were subsequently observed in Miyazaki, while waves of 20 cm were observed in Kōchi.
