The construction of the bridge began in September 1938. From the moment the deck was built, it started moving vertically on windy days, leading construction workers to nickname the bridge "Galloping Gertie." This movement was noticeable even when the bridge was opened to the public. Several measures intended to stop this movement were ineffective, and the main span of the bridge eventually collapsed when a 40 mph (64 km/h) wind blew on the morning of November 7, 1940.
