In 2011, the ALZ-113 virus causes the collapse of human civilization following martial law, social unrest and the economic collapse of all countries in the world. Ten years later, in 2021, 90% of the world's population has died and there are small pockets of survivors in the mountains. An ape named Caesar leads and governs a new generation of apes in a community located in Muir Forest.
While walking through the forest, Caesar's son and Rocket's son (Ash) encounter a human being, named Carver, who in a panic shoots the ape Ash, wounding him. Carver calls for help from the rest of his group of armed survivors, led by a man named Malcolm, while Ash asks for help from the other apes. Caesar orders the humans to leave the forest.
The small group arrives at a tower in a ruined San Francisco, where they meet with other surviving humans (humans who did not die as they were genetically immune to the virus).
Later, Caesar leads a large group of apes to the city and makes the humans see that the apes do not want war, but will fight if necessary to defend their home. He then asks the humans to stay in his territory and states that the apes will do the same.
